Contrasting results in our first two track league meetings with a second and fifth places so far. The junior section are going really well on the track with both schools and full county events taking place. A blustery night at Nutley Bottom saw a good win in the opening mob match when the all time list had to be re-written.

Many thanks to Geoff and his team for standing out in the inclement weather to provide a very welcome and warming barbecue. Thanks also to the time keepers and recorders on the night.

The club dinner was a very enjoyable night with a lot of inter table banter throughout the prize giving. Many thanks to John Hoare and ET for arranging the evening and to Gwynneth for arranging the trophies.

The second consistency race of the year is the BRAISHFIELD 5miles on June 15th. The entry sheet has been removed from the board though I believe entries may be accepted on the day.

At the time of writing we do not have confirmation of the date of the return mob match so the run on the 19th June will be a normal Handicap event, possibly over the 3.5 mile harrow way course.

FINALLY: Are there ANY outstanding reports that I can add to next months edition, great changing room comments on a successful day at NETLEY but no report as yet.

Vets T&F League from Geoff

This season’s first Vets track and field meeting was held at Basingstoke Monday evening 28 April. Moira West won the L50 100metres in 15.5secs and ran the 400metres in 76.8secs. Liz Sandal-Ball won the L50 1500metres in 5mins 50secs and was third in the Javelin, throwing 12.91m. John Hodge ran 66.8secs for 400metres.

MOB MATCH AGAINST BASINGSTOKE. NUTLEY BOTTOM MAY 8th from Franny

This was the night when the club seniors got well and truly stuffed, not by Basingstoke but, by the clubs junior section. Josh took the race by the throat to win by 41 seconds to take an amazing 4minutes and 29 seconds off his PB. More pleasing to him though was the fact he beat his dad’s best by 15 seconds and now stands second on the all time list. Aaron had a great run to slice 1 minute 4 seconds from his best and climbed up to fourth all time. Was the junior squad satisfied with that……oh no!!! In third spot was Craig with a stunning debut over this course and the reward of 8th all time. What are their parents feeding them on?

Amanda Proctor took fourth place to led home the Basingstoke team ahead of our first senior in the shape of Mark Simcox.. Keith narrowly got the better of our leading Vet. Martin while Cath ran well to finish just ahead of Denny who put in a rare outing on the road. Further PB’s came from Steve, Dave Titcomb and Ian while there were a string of promising debuts.

Naturally the handicap was another rout for the juniors with Josh having a big margin over Craig, who in turn, had a big gap ahead of Aaron

Hampshire AA Track and Field Championships 10/11 May at Portsmouth from Geoff

On May 10, Aaron qualified for the 800metres finals by equaling his PB of 2mins 11secs in the heats. In the final he was up against tough opposition and finished seventh in a PB of 2mins 10secs.

On May 11, Aaron comfortably qualified for the 1500metres finals in 4mins 29secs. In the final he suffered from a slight calf strain which pegged him back to eighth place in 4mins 27secs.

Josh easily won his heat in 4mins 47secs, and followed this up with a resounding victory in the finals in 4mins 29secs, his second County Championship win this year.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE MATCH 1 Watford 4th May 2003 from Ian Vosser

2nd Place sets us off with a good start to the season

The match was a double fixture but seemed surprising quiet on arrival, we soon found out that there were only three other teams in our division. We had quite a strong team out so we were looking for a good result to start the season off. Watford’s Stadium is nicely sheltered by trees and many athletes run PB’s here.

We had a good start with the pole vault, David Vosser managed to clear 1.10 and so did Dave Bush giving us 5.5 points. With a bit of training these guys could be good? In the Hammer we secured 9 early points with

a first from our international athlete and a second from Simon Morgan. We got mainly 2nd and 3rds from the other throwing events, which gave us some good points.

The jumping events weren’t quite as strong but Dave Bush came 2nd in both the pole vault and Long jump. I also started in my first ever southern league match by doing a long jump I came fourth which wasn’t bad from my debut appearance. (Lets not mention that there were only four teams)

We were strong on the track with only Newton Abbott getting more points, Keith Vallis won the 3000M S/ch and Keith Clark came 2nd in the B, David Vosser had a joint first on the 800M. This is his first ever deadheat in the 26years of running in this league. Our new sprinter James Coney came fourth in the 100M and 400 M also a 3rd in the 200M, hopefully he will be back next match to give us more valuable points. He also contributed strongly to both Relays. James is a coach at the Andover Club and will be a great addition to our team over the coming year.

Overall the match was a great success with us coming second by only half a point, this places us 8th in the table, which is good start and will hopefully be improved.

South of England (under 15) Championships Watford – May 24/25 from Mike Bliss

Having won the Hampshire 1500m championship in 4.29sec, two weeks previously, Josh turned up for his heat on day one in nervous, but confident mood. He was in the third heat of three, with the first three and three fastest loosers to qualify for the final the following day. The first two heats were won in about 4.22sec, showing the quality of the opposition, but I estimated that a fourth place finish in under 4.30sec, would probably be enough for Josh to get through. However, Josh had other ideas and ran a superbly controlled race from the front, with his rivals dropping off the group one by one, so that by the final 300m, there were only three of them left in the group. Competitive spirit took over in the last 100m, with Josh ensuring he finished first, though he claimed he was “just striding out”! His time of 4.25sec, equalled his P.B., but what was more encouraging was that he said that he felt “really good”, that he wasn’t going ‘flat out’ and there was “more in the tank”.

His final the following day was due at 12.35pm, and at the time of warming up, the race programme was bang on time. The boys were warmed up and ready to go at 12.35pm, but unfortunately, in the space of half an hour, the programme suddenly fell behind and worse, the organisers fitted in an extra ‘run off’ hurdles race due to a ‘dead heat’ earlier in the day. Josh’s pre-race nerves were not helped by what turned out to be 25 minutes delay, particularly as no officials had bothered to tell the boys what was going on! Josh will hopefully remember in future events that these things happen and you shouldn’t let these things and pre-race nerves, affect your performance. He certainly didn’t let them affect him here!

The final started with the usual mad sprint for the first bend, and Josh had his usual sluggish start, being blocked off and running the first 200m in last place. This time, he listened to his ‘old man’s’ advice and did not put in a sprint to try and catch the leaders quickly, but maintained his pace to pass a couple of runners before going through the first lap in 67 sec. The leaders went through in about 63/64sec, and over the next laps, with Josh maintaining his pace, and the others slowing, he picked off runners one by one. With 500m to go, he moved into fourth place, with a gap of about 5m to the leading group of three. 100m later at the bell and he was with them! Down the back straight for the last time he managed to pass one runner just before the 200m mark. By then though, the leading two had already sprinted away. Josh nearly came to grief when he tripped on the inside rail round the final bend, and in the final 100m, two fast finishing rivals looked like they were going to go past him. However, Josh put in another finishing burst to not only hold them off, but took him to only 2/10ths of a sec. behind the second place finisher.

A bronze medal in a championship of this status is a brilliant achievement. But to do it as a 13 year old, with still not quite a years running under his belt, against some runners a year older, and all probably more experienced, shows a great deal of talent and hope of even better things to come. It is also a reflection on Geoff’s coaching, John’s rep.sessions, Aaron’s and Craig’s rivalry, and the support and encouragement from many others of ‘the Harriers’. His finishing time was also a bonus! 4.18 sec. was a 7 sec.P.B. and smashed the English Schools qualifying time by 4 sec. Typical Josh, on the way home he stated that he wanted to do 4.15sec next time out, the time of the winner!

Some results from Ian Ford

David had suggested it might be worth me providing an update on what I’ve been doing since last getting a mention at the Petersfield Half. Hope the following is of use………….
Since then it’s been a mixture of time trials and races leading to the start of the Duathlon season. On the bike front things are improving, having already recorded a PB at 10 miles – although there have been some right
grovelling sessions with the strong winds we’ve had of late.Running front -came third in the Adidas Breakfast run with 46.25 for the 8.25 miles and only a few seconds slower than I managed the year before.
The first duathlon of the season was the UK Powerman in Ashbourne (12/60/8k) and none of it flat! That distance so early in the year was a bit of a shock but suppose we were all in the same position, bar a few who had been away warm weather training, not that that helps in cold and windy Derbyshire! Had a pretty good if painful race and despite finishing 41st overall, because there was an international field of elites in the race, was fist vet in the 45-49 category, which had been the main aim of the exercise as it meant I qualified for the ITU World Duathlon Championships and also the Powerman World Championships. It also caused a problem in that it means
two trips to Switzerland this year – the original cunning plan had been to stay for the week in Switzerland as the races fell on the 31st August and 7th September, unfortunately the Powerman has been put back to the 14th
September so am still considering what to do. Suppose the question is do you really want to do a duathlon of 10/150/30 in the Swiss mountains?

The reason for the ‘painful’ part of the race was that in the second run managed to run straight into a fellow competitor coming the other way! Probably broke my nose and finished the race with flatted nose and a fair bit of blood around!
Since then was 7th and 1st Vet in Steyning Duathlon and 17th and second Vet in the Cambridge Duathlon. With two of these three events being part of the National Duathlon series it leaves me quite nicely placed at the top of the
table in the Vet 45-49 category at the moment.
Coming right up to date, on Saturday after the club dinner won the Thruxton Duathlon, thanks to two good runs and not letting anyone get too far ahead in the bike. Caught the leader on the final climb up to the finish, for those of you that know the circuit, so cut it all a bit fine!
Next important race is the National Championships at Swindon in a couple of weeks. After that have a trip to Carlsbad as the GB Age Group Team Manager to the European Triathlon championships after which if I decide on the long course championship it’ll be back to clocking up the base miles to last the distance come September.

Date of next meeting 9/6/03 SOUTHERN LEAGUE Division 4 West MATCH 2 Horsham 17th May 2003 by David Vosser

Well Hammered at Horsham

Whilst the rest of the country were watching the Cup Final, a smaller than normal team of Harriers had a wet and miserable day at an elongated joint men’s and woman’s fixture at Horsham. Looking at our opposition’s results from the first round we knew before hand that this was going to be a tough match and we weren’t disappointed.

A number of notable results did however stand out for us, in particular the 5000metres. Jamie gave us our only win of the day after a competitive run against a good Channel Islands athlete, but Jamie’s magical sprint finish gave him a clear victory. A big thank you and well done to Dave Mills who after a few hours notice travelled to Horsham and ran a super 5k to gain our only 2nd place on the track. Josh and Aaron however both performed really well against stiff opposition gaining valuable points finishing 3rd in their events

Star of the field was Simon Morgan, who threw the Hammer to a seasons best gaining our only other 2nd place.
