FRANNY’S BITS.
As you can see the fixture list contains a lot of races over the summer months, many of which are evening events. If you fancy running any of the above races and need further details then see me after training.
There was an excellent turnout for the return Mob Match where once again we managed to out number our hosts. Despite the slightly greasy course there were some excellent performances as we completed the double by a comfortable margin.
Please note that the club pentathlon will be held on July 7th at Down Grange starting at 2pm.. This event has struggled for support in recent years from the seniors in contrast to the enthusiasm shown by some of the juniors. It is held in a very relaxed atmosphere and is open to everyone regardless of age or ability. Why not turn up and have a go, events are 100m, long jump, discus, javelin and 1500m. Alternatively, if you wish to help with timekeeping or measuring please let Geoff know.
Poole 10K Sunday 2nd June from Geoff
Mike Bliss was our sole representative at this year’s race, which was oversubscribed and limited to 1200 entrants confirming that the popularity of road racing is at long last rising towards the heady days of the 1980s. Mike had a good hard run finishing 7th in 32m 44s and 4th in the men’s over 40s category.
Young Athletes Track and Field Meeting at Andover on Monday 3rd June from Geoff
Aaron Harris competed in the Young Athletes Track and Field Meeting at Andover on Monday 3rd June. The numbers just were not there to promote competition, and Aaron finished 2nd in the Under 15 Boys 800metres in a disappointing time of 2m 18s, well below his best.

FOREST 5 mile RACE at BRACKNELL 12th JUNE from Franny
This was the perfect location for an evening race, Starting at the “Lookout” in Bracknell forest the course was run on good quality forest trails amongst acre upon acre of mature pine woods. The course was described as undulating though in my opinion there were only two hills of merit, the first being the gently rising opener that took about 4 minutes to climb and a very short, sharp climb at three miles. With the remainder of the course being so easy and the weather so good,it meant that fast times were possible on the accurately measured course.
I was feeling slightly drained, following a 60 mile week, so I made a steady start and my first three miles got progressively faster. The uphill stretch around three miles slowed me slightly but I managed to stick in a sub 6 minute mile to finish off what was a very pleasing run. I was very surprised with the time as I had only been aiming for around 33 minutes. Once again this was my fastest time for many years.
Jill was suffering from a bad back and, after attempting a warmup jog, wisely decided to opt out of the race with the hope of running the following nights mob match.
This is a well organised event that has been running for several years and is only 30 minutes from Basingstoke. There are other evening events planned through the summer so check the notice board for more details.

321 Finished.Hampshire Schools Track & Field Championships Portsmouth Saturday 15th June from Geoff
Aaron Harris, competed in the 800metres Junior Boys category. He warmed up, by comfortably winning his heat in 2mins 20secs in preparation for the final, four hours later. Here he was up against tough opposition, but after a good start found himself making up the lead group of three, and going through 400metres in 65 seconds. At this point, Aaron applied the pressure and tried to burn off the opposition, but was overtaken with 150m to go, finishing runner up in a personal best time of 2mins 14.1secs, to earn himself a place in a Southern Inter Counties Match.
Inter-Counties Track & Field meeting at Basingstoke on Saturday 22nd June from Geoff
Aaron Harris, represented Hampshire Schools, in the Junior Boys 800metres at this event. He was up against some of the best 800m runners in England, and to his credit, got involved with the race in the early stages. However, he paid the price for his fast start finishing last, in a disappointing time of 2m 15s.
New Forest Triathlon at Fawley Sunday 23rd June from Geoff
Undaunted from his previous day’s disappointing 800m race, Aaron Harris competed in the 13/14 year old category in this event, comprising a 300m swim followed by a 6km Bike ride and a 2k4m run. Aaron was in second place after the swim, but managed to gain the lead during the bike race and extend it by over a minute in the 2K4m run. This was the second of a four event series, and with two wins out of two under his belt, he is in prime position to represent the Southern Counties in the regional finals in September.
CONSISTENCEY LEAGUE.
A good start to the league with high turnouts in the mob matches combined with excellent turnouts at Netley and Braishfield. Early leaders are Blissy who has maximum points in the men’s section with Belinda having a one point lead over Audra in the women’s. The next events are at Bourton on the Water and the Stoke six.

RACE FOR LIFE 26th JUNE from Franny
A huge field of around 5500 runners crammed into Down Grange for this highly popular charity event. The club was well represented over a twisting 5km course on a very warm evening. Our first runner home was Jill who had a great run to finish 4th overall with her fastest 5k for some time. Nicky came in next with a very impressive 14th place ahead of a storming PB run from Dorothy who was 25th overall. Other PB’s were scored by Helen, Karen and Belinda who all seemed to have enjoyed the event but at the time of writing I have no news of Claire’s or Cathy’s runs.

MOB MATCH at DOWN GRANGE 13th JUNE from Franny
An impressive turnout of 26 runners saw us win this away leg to retain the trophy for another year. Mike led the charge as we recorded the first 5 finishers over a course that was a bit slippery in places. Most of us had good runs but several to note were Aarons’ sub 19 minute clocking, Darren, who had a good warm up for Braishfield, Audra and Jill, who had close race for first club lady home and Ed Wicke, who made a very quick start and managed to hold on to take the scalps of ET and Geoff. There was also a big improvement from young Alex while Frank is starting to signs of improved fitness.
The handicap saw the first three places filled by the three runners with the smallest handicaps. Alex was the winner with Cathy edging out Belinda for second place.

TOTTON 5km. 22nd June from Franny
A LATE RESULT JUST IN (as they say on the television).
Audra described this as a fast downhill course and this may be reflected in the times, Cath ran a PB to win the women’s race and must be pleased to have cracked the 18 minute barrier. Not to be outdone Audra had an excellent run to narrowly miss a sub 20 minute clocking to finish 5th lady.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE – HASTINGS – 08.06.2002 from John Hoare
On paper this looked a difficult fixture so a third place was a real bonus. Highlights of the track events included another fine double in the 5000m this time Jamie being partnered by Ian. The Steeplechase yielded nine points out of ten with Keith suffering a rare defeat in the ‘A’ string and the hard working Darren winning the ‘B’. Keith also had a heavy workload and gained good points in the 400m Hurdles and the 800m. Jeremy, Dave Bush and Dave Vosser covered the shorter distance events and were rewarded with a good points tally.
We were less successful in the Jumps the pick of the results being three excellent 3rd places in the ‘A’ strings for Jeremy. Simon and Darren covered all the throwing events and can feel well pleased with their afternoon’s work. Two second places in the Hammer and Javelin, a third in the Shot and fourth in the Discus ‘A’ came Simons way while Darrens haul in the ‘B’ string included a win in the Javelin and three third places in the other events.

Tour of Derwent Races – Four races in Four days from Dave Vosser
I always try and find a race when I’m away on holiday, preferably something nice and short. We had booked a week near Ashbourne in Derbyshire and I couldn’t resist the temptation of this ‘Tour’
Race 1 8pm @ Duffield Friday 31st May 4.45 miles
Result 9th in 25m 51s, 6th Vet and 88 finished.
We arrived just 15mins before the start after a long journey so I opted for a steady start but soon got swept up in the spirit of things but was disappointed with my low vets position.
Race 2 3pm @ Wirksworth 4.2 mile Fell Race Saturday 1st June
Result 12th in 25m 36s 4th Vet, Madeline 84th 39m 34s and 101 finished
This was a very tough and hot run, which Madeline didn’t really enjoy. After a short downhill start, I ran uphill for 13minutes and found the steep downhill nearly as difficult.
Race 3 10.00am 5 Mile Road Race @ Milford Sunday 2nd June
Result 7th 31m 16s 3rd Vet and 67 finished.
Another Hilly course, with a lot of tired runners who all opted for a slow start. I was happier with a higher placing which helped to move me up to 6th in the overall tour league.
Race 4 11.00am 4Mile @ Rowsley Monday 3rd June
Result 6th 26m 10s 3rd Vet and 70 finished
Advertised as the toughest of the lot, and it didn’t disappoint. My first two mile splits were 7m 56s followed by 7m 32s fortunately its was downhill from there.
Overall result
6th 108m 53s and 3rd Vet
A really enjoyable series of races, highly recommended.
CRIMEWATCH.
Disturbing reports are coming in from Jamie and Blissy regarding one of our senior men, who was spotted comitting an act of indecent exposure following a recent road race. The alleged offender had run the Braishfield 5 with his shorts on back to front and after some ribbing on the warm down decided on correcting his attire. The middle of the high street may not have been the most logical place to do this but evidently the act was witnessed by a passing car full of stunned people.
PC Mills is currently inquiring after this well-built male who has been seen recently doing multiple events in the Southern track league .
SOUTHERN LEAGUE – GUILDFORD – 22-06-2002 from John Hoare
With all four of our opponents below us in the league before this match started hopes were high of a good result. So it was a bit disappointing to come away with only a third place especially losing second to local rivals Fleet and Crookham by a narrow seven points. But there were still some excellent individual results.
To me the highlight of the day was the 3000m Steeplechase. Keith Vallis totally dominated the race to finish a clear winner but it was Keith Clark with his somewhat unorthodox hurdling technique that caught the eye. Coming in as a last minute replacement to gain a point or two he comfortably won the ‘B’ string. Even more significant was the five points he gained as we finished just four ahead of Salisbury for third place.
Once again we dominated the 5000m with Jamie and Mike gaining another maximum. But that was the sum total of our wins over the afternoon. Simon and Ivan did extremely well in the throwing events with Simon taking three second paces in the Javelin, Hammer and ‘B’string Shot while Ivan produced a 10.31m throw in the ‘A’ string Shot for another second. Watch this man as a future High Jumper judging by his late afternoon practice!!
In the jumping events Jeremy and Richard had a good afternoon with Jeremy gaining second in the Triple, second equal in the High Jump and third in the Long Jump. Richard gave superb support, the best of his ‘B’ string results being a second in the Long Jump.
On the track Keith Vallis gained us another pair of seconds in the two hurdle events while Keith Clark completed his successful afternoon with a pair of thirds in the 800m and 1500m ‘B’ strings. Another second place went to Dave Bush in the ‘B’ 400m who with Dave Vosser worked hard all afternoon to glean their points. Well done too to Jeremy who again had a busy day adding good points in the 100m, 200m and 110m Hurdles to those achieved in the three jumps. Add the two relays and it was a total of eight events.
With two meetings to go, those at Battersea and Basingstoke, we are quite comfortably placed in the league and looking to gain a top ten finish.
