CLUB PERSON OF THE YEAR MAY 1999 TO APRIL 2000
Congratulations to Mark Dennison for winning this prestigious award. Clearly your club colleagues were impressed with the manner in which you look after their funds and were equally impressed your ways of extracting money from them.
MOST IMPROVED ATHLETE OF THE YEAR MAY 1999 TO APRIL 2000
Congratulations to Audra Dennison for winning this prestigious award, following a great return to form after the birth of
her son Robbie.
LONDON MARATHON. APRIL 16th.
With the weather forecasters predicting wet weather I made sure that I packed plenty of spare kit for standing around in after the race whilst waiting for our group to reassemble for the journey home. The excess baggage made for a cramped trip up to London on a beautiful morning as it slowly became apparent that the forecasters had cocked it up again.
Jill and I joined the party from Basingstoke, whilst Dave made his own way up and Nick took his usual option of spending the previous night in a London hotel. We all made good starts and all seemed to avoid the overcrowding that has bugged the event for me in recent years. The weather was quite warm but there was a cooling breeze along the river in the closing miles. All said it was perfect conditions for fast times. Nick was first to finish. He appeared to have a good race to beat his target of 3 hours and was only several minutes outside his PB.
Dave had lost alot of training earlier in the year but had worked hard in the weeks leading up to the event. I believe his run was going well until the closing miles when he came to a halt and was sick. Jills prearation mirrored Dave’s in that she was carrying an injury earlier in the year. During the race she suffered from severe stomach problems but even so she caught Dave around the 24 mile mark and together they crossed the line in around 3hours 23 minutes.
This was a superb effort by Jill to beat her PB by around 5-6 minutes though she was in some distress after the run still suffering with her stomach. Dave was disappointed with his run but can look forward to going much faster next year.
I made a dream start but at 8 miles I had to make a pitstop which cost me 3 minutes. Despite this the next 10 miles were a doddle as I slowly moved up the field looking to break 3 hours 30
minutes. At 19 miles however I doubled up with stomach pains and had to walk / waddle most of the next mile until the next portaloo. A long pitstop put me well off schedule and I lost interest, so I took a steady jog in back to the finish with plenty of running left in my legs.
The annoying thing was watching the race on video later and seeing runners whom I had passed beating my target time. The organisation was as good as ever and I think we are all looking forward to next years event.

HELP HELP HELP HELP HELP HELP HELP HELP HELPAfter compiling the list of track and field records I have now set out on a new project, namely to work out a list of all the club road running records for men and women. I am hoping to produce lists for all the standard distances from 5k to marathon and also some of the clubs own events (ie. handicaps).
The other objective is to ensure the lists contain the club bests for each age group from senior through to vet 60. Therefore to make the task simpler I would like (if possible) any runner who feels that they may have a qualifying time to give me a list of their road pbs. with relavent dates and venues, also your date of birth would be helpful.
At present some of the vets. bests make very sorry reading especially in the 45 and over groups so, go back through your diaries and jot down any run you think may qualify as a club record. To our faster runners …what are your pbs. in club colours, alot of results have missed the newsletter and therefore will not make the lists.
STATTO.
With the summer track and field season fast approaching I have finally (after several months research ) managed to list the club track and field records. I have trawled through every copy of the newsletter dating back to 1976 and also the early club results books. I hope this is an accurate list BUT if you have any queries or corrections I would greatly appreciate them. At the time of writing this I do not know if Chris Tall was first claim when he set his records so they are listed after the next best. Also, can Dave or anyone supply a date and venue for his mile record ? ……..FRANNY.

BIONIC
Our winner this month must have been training in secret. She started training earlier this year after a long lay off through injury and after only a few weeks succeeded in knocking minutes off her Gibbet PB. She followed this with a great run in the London Marathon again knocking minutes off her PB. Congratulations Jill Hills, none of us has any idea how you can turn out such great results under the circumstances, but keep going, it can only get better.
