TRAINING WEEKEND. From Franny

I am rather pushed for time as I type this and hope that someone is preparing a fuller account for either this or the next edition of the newsletter. Most of the club appeared to be present in Cornwall this year, many regulars were joined by one or two new faces and a great time appears to have been had by all. The running was hard and varied as usual and once again Paul bunked out of the hill session. The Sunday morning run from Padstow has to be one of the most enjoyable runs I have done in quite a few years. Thanks to all those who helped with the food, which was as delicious as usual especially, Dave Henery’s curry night, which has now become a regular feature.

Many thanks therefore to Steve Mcnair who puts in a lot of time in organizing this event, same time, same place next year?

OVERTON RECREATION CENTRE. From Denny

Since the turn of the year, the way in which payments are made to ORC re: club use of facilities has changed.

Previously, the club has paid 14 pounds per session, i.e.: 42 pounds per week, unless bank holidays etc. fall in that particular week. Users would be encouraged to join the membership scheme as well as paying club subscriptions, but not a condition.

In 2001, our levy per session was reduced to 12 pounds but regular users would have to join the membership scheme. Reasons for this were twofold. (1) The ethos of the ORC was originally designed for participants of the facilities to be part of a membership scheme covering use of facilities and monthly prize draw – this is something the ORC wished to maintain. (2) To ensure numbers of the scheme do not fall below minimum required levels.

The club committee thus decided to pay for all regular users or the facilities, the 18 pounds per year membership, payable in January each year, all the numbers being C/O Overton Harriers. Therefore any winners of the monthly prize draw, will be due to the club not the individual name only used for reference purposes.

Overall, there is little effect on the annual costs to the club, with the chance of cash prizes each month.

I hope that is clear, any questions please speak with me.

Mark Dennison

Hon. Treasurer.

CLUB RECORD FOR SIMCOX ??? from Franny

EPSOM ODDBALLS 2000 PERCH Multi-terrain Race.

  28th JANUARY

With not running at Parliament Hill, I decided to enter the second running of this excellent multi-terrain race. The location being right near the main stand at Epsom racecourse made this a great scenic race, much better than the Goodwood Hants. league. The course was measured in the old unit of PERCHES. And amounted to 6.25 miles in total.

The course starts off on road, up a hill, and then does a loop round the boundary of the racecourse. It then leads onto a large loop of various muddy tracks, road and woodland before finishing in a valley with a steep uphill to the finish line.

A group of four of us got away after about a mile and I took the lead at halfway with only one other runner with me. He stuck with me from here on in and just got me on the steep uphill with about 30 meters to go. I won a new pair of tracksters and a tenner for my efforts. I recommend this race to anyone and will hopefully go for it next year.

RESULT: 1st T. FROST 36m 43secs. (Liss Runners)

2nd M. SIMCOX 36m 45secs. Approx. 350 Runners. MANY THANKS TO MARK FOR THE ABOVE REPORT.

WELL: Does this qualify as an inaugural club record?. A perch is an old unit of distance that equates to roughly 5.5 yards. Already I have been told that some club members have been CARPING on about this record’s legitimacy. I now await a landslide of record claims covering the full gamut of the many weird imaginations in this club…….However 2nd place in such a large field was a fine performance by Mark who, with his recent form is starting to show a more competitive edge to his running.

STATTO.HANTS. XC League at BOURNEMOUTH.

The cross-country season came to an end for most club members on the boring multi-lap course at Kings Park. The course is quite flat with very little mud, which makes it ideal for fast running though rather dull compared with the other league courses used this season. The senior men went into this final fixture knowing that they could finish anywhere from 2nd to 6th in the league so a strong team effort was needed. Unfortunately, injury, illness and a christening left us sorely depleted and it appeared that a fine season would end up with something of an anticlimax.

Team spirit however was superb and despite missing several of our top runners a great performance gave the A team our second best result of the season as they took 3rd on the day to confirm themselves in the bronze medal position in the league. Ian was unwell before the start but still led home the team whilst rubber-stamping his individual victory in the vets. league. Keith is going very well of late and had a good run whilst second claim Bob Taylor had his best run in an Overton vest this year. Voss put his injury problems behind him with a gutsy run and seemed happy with his top 50 placing. He also anchored the vets. team to another victory which meant that the trophy return to Overton for a forth consecutive season. Martin has given good support all season and was final rewarded with an A team spot after several near misses earlier in the season.

There is no official league for B teams although the results are supplied after each fixture and following our B teams 3rd place on the day I can confirm that they would have taken 2nd spot in the league behind the Aldershot masses. Denny is starting (touch wood) to show a return to form following his injury nightmare and Nick rounded off a good season in style with a solid run. Dave Henery used different tactics this time to get the better of Eric whilst I completed the team after having my usual hard battle with the improving Dave Bright. Surprise package of the day was Mick, who had by far his best run for many months to finish well clear of Steve who was a bit below par. JT finished the club interest in what was the smallest field of the season. Following the event it was announced that despite missing the last race with the flu, Paul had done enough to take 3rd in the vets. category, thereby rounding off a fine season for the men.

  From Franny 3rd FEBRUARY.

16th I.FORD 33m 16sec 133rd D.HENERY 39m 51sec

200 Finished.

The women’s squad was also affected by various medical conditions, Cath thought she was going down with Paul’s flu but she still had a good run in 5th place. This was good enough for 4th spot in the overall table and ensured that she won the Vets. title. Jill showed the benefit of those long Sunday morning runs with a superb 15th place. The senior team was completed by Nicky who was a doubtful starter following injury problems during the week. Three in the top 30 gave the team its best placing of the season (3rd) which left them in 8th place overall.

The lady Vets. won for the second month in a row as Liz showed a continuing improvement, the team finished 3rd in the league and will start amongst the favourites next winter providing they can get all their runners out. Audra completed the season well and will be looking forward to some faster runs next year. Finally, it was good to see Moira out in a club vest again as she put in a fine effort to complete the squad.

90 Finished.

John may have found the flat course to his liking as he had an improved run in the U17’s, Matt was our only runner in a small but very competitive field in the U15’s and ran well despite suffering with a knee injury recently. The U13’s have completed a team in every fixture this season and that hasn’t happened in the club for many years and congratulations must go to Geoff for the organizing that he does. This was their highest position of the season (6th) and were led home again by Aaron who continued his string of fine runs. Good support again came from Scott who has put a lot of effort in over the winter. Chris stopped at one point during the race but gamely made it to the finish to complete the team, which finished a fine 8th of 14 teams in the final table.

CONSISTENCY LEAGUE.

Sadly the consistency league has to be altered again following the cancellation of the Bramley 20 due to the outbreak of Foot and mouth disease. Coming on top of the cancellation of the Hayling 10 and missing the closing date of the Christchurch 10k we don’t appear to have had much luck this year. The final event is the Eastleigh 10k on March 18th which is also the club 10km championships. This means double points so both Nick and Cath need only reasonable finishes to take their respective titles with Keith and Liz being their main opposition. Dave Henery misses Eastleigh but reckons he has enough points in hand to beat Eric. I don’t think Dave realizes that the dark horse for the vets. title is actually JT.

VILLAGE HANDICAP.

From Franny 15th FEBRUARY.It was another dark night along the lynch and this was reflected in some relatively slow times. First home was new member Andy with a promising debut. First scorer in the handicap was Gareth who ran really well for a 47 second PB. Next was PC. Mills with a 7 second PB with Alistair clocking his fastest time for five years in third. Fastest on the night was Jamie who was the only runner to break 20 minutes. Fastest in the league was Mark, followed once again by Keith who trimmed a whole second from his PB. Third fastest was Martin out was making his first outing on this course for seven years!!!

With one race remaining both titles have been decided, Mark and Keith are guaranteed a one-two in the time league but the battle for third goes down to the wire with Nick having a one point lead over Cath. Keith has also sown up the handicap league but a battle royal is on the cards for the minor placings with Dave and Matt Bright, Gareth, Liz and Mark Simcox all in contention.

FULL LEAGUE TABLES ARE ON THE NOTICE BOARD.

With the Bramley races cancelled I decided to race over this undulating Winchester course. Into a slight headwind over the first half made it tough and the Nations hill at 6k meant a sub 30 minute run was not quite on!!. I’m sure over a flatter course my time would be worth about a minute so I was pleased enough with my run.

Race winner Mike Trees 31min 54 secs.

approx. 400 Finished.A HARRIER IN KOSOVO

(ONE MONTH ON AND FOUR MORE TO GO)

From Mike McMahon

With any luck the e-mail technology to Geoff would have worked once again and this article will find its way into the Club Newsletter. Many thanks, Geoff for sending me the last one over the ‘net’, it was good to be able to forget Kosovo for a while and catch up on the Club’s news. It might seem somewhat obvious to say it, but the one thing that does not stand still in Kosovo is time. We have all been extremely busy over the past few weeks and that certainly makes our time here pass very quickly indeed.

Since the beginning of February my Battalion has been operating the 320km long line of communication (LOC) from Pristina (Kosovo’s capital) south to Thessaloniki in Greece via Macedonia. By the end of this month we would have moved some 600 or so vehicles and pieces of equipment in/out of Kosovo, as well as some 300 people. Units leaving Kosovo will drive their own vehicles south, load them onto shipping chartered by the Ministry of Defence and then fly home from Greece. The incoming units do the route in reverse. Believe me it is quite a sight to see a relatively small area of the port absolutely crammed solid with military equipment and people; to an outsider it would appear to be utter chaos, but fortunately, like Baldrick, we always have a cunning plan which has worked so far! In Thessaloniki we have the temporary use of part of an existing Greek army camp which accommodates the small number of my soldiers needed to operate the port and a ‘home’ for the other soldiers in transit (usually 24-36 hours). We have only five military chefs ‘in residence’ there; the other evening I witnessed these hard working guys and girls feeding 500 hungry mouths within one hour!

In my last article, I gave you a ‘flavour’ of my initial impressions of Kosovo society and the ‘feel’ of the place. The ethnic tension between the Kosovar Albanians and Kosovar Serbs is evident wherever you travel in the country. Since the end of the war and arrival of NATO in June 1999, the Serbs have been in the minority as most of the previous Serbian population relocated to Serbia proper. A number of Serb communities ranging in size from small enclaves within Kosovar-Albanian dominated areas to exclusively Serb villages and towns are dotted around this small country. The level of fear and intimidation is such that a network of new roads has been constructed which links these Serb areas so that they can have freedom of movement without having to ‘run the gauntlet’ of transiting areas inhabited by Kosovar-Albanians. Serb vehicles are easily distinguishable as, if their owners wish to travel to Serbia, they must have a Serbia registration plate which is different from a Kosovo number plate; the authorities in Serbia will not allow the latter to enter their territory. Therefore, Kosovar-Serbs risk their vehicles being stoned or worse when they travel through Kosovar-Albanian areas.

Although the majority of British Army units spend only 4-6 months in Kosovo, it is my view that we should take every opportunity to ‘add value’ in some way to the long term development of the various communities, irrespective of their ethnic composition. We have embarked on a project to provide a ‘facelift’ to the medical facilities within isolated Serb communities. The medical staff are invariably very competent, but the conditions in which they work are, to say the least, quite basic and very poorly maintained. During our tenure, we will hopefully turn a particularly run down building into a better facility which has electricity and running water (the latter does not exist at all at present), as well as a waterproof roof, furniture and better all weather access. If we can get this building finished and make a start on a second one, then our successors will be able to take on an existing project and keep the ‘bandwagon’ rolling for the longer term.

One of the saddest incidents to occur during our tour so far, was the senseless bombing (Friday 16th February) of a bus from Serbia full of Serb men, women and children either returning to their homes in Kosovo or visiting relatives in the country. This vehicle was the first in a convoy of four and a bomb placed in a culvert under the road was detonated as the bus drove over it. Some of my soldiers were the first medics to arrive at the scene and the carnage which confronted them was indescribable. A pre-planned major incident operation swung into action and both my hospital facility and that operated by the US Army provided the essential life saving surgery for the seriously injured as well as treatment for those with minor injuries. Sadly, as I write this article the day after the tragedy, the death toll stands at seven and, by the very nature of some of the injuries sustained by those listed as critical, is likely to increase. Although of no comfort to the families who have lost loved ones, the bomb detonated at the front of the bus directly underneath the engine block which absorbed a degree of the blast. Had it been activated further down the chassis, many more deaths would have occurred. The sight that confronted me yesterday afternoon in our hospital complex is certainly one that will remain with me for a long time.

BIONIC

Our winner this month has had a very good winter, establishing himself as a regular member of the Senior Men’s team in the Hampshire League, and smashing his PB in the Wokingham ½ marathon by running 74minutes.

Congratulations go to

Keith Clark, who I am sure will carry this background through to the forthcoming track season, with good result.
