4. Help required for Southern League on 24^th June to run event. May need to do refreshments.
5. Welcome pack- Geoff and Gwyneth to finalise.
6. Elizabeth to continue as Ladies captain. John ND Eric to organise vets captain.

8. Harriers web site- Ian Vosser has trial site made up. Also site to advertise races.

SHINFIELD 10km. MAY 1st. 

Thanks to Mick Woods for supplying these results: 
Mick decided to take advantage of the bank holiday and took part in this fairly local 10k near Reading. The race was won by a Kenyan, Peter Edukam, in the very fast time of 29min. 32seconds. In good conditions Mick must have had a pleasing run to finish in the top 100 and get the better of Steve who was, I believe, running his second race in close succesion in an attempt to race himself to fitness following a lack of training in recent weeks.
In the 3km fun run young Christopher had a good run in a large field and will hopefully try a few more events during the coming months.

THEALE 10 km
MAY 9TH 
Another useful run by Mick as he ran the opening event of this summer series. The course contains some off-road running and has a delightful climb in the first mile. For someone looking for a low key race these are an ideal Tuesday evening fixture.28th M. WOODS 42m 20sec.

As usual there was only a small group travelling for this years race on a bright but very breezy day.On what should be a very fast, flat course things seemed to be a bit of a struggle all round with below-par performances.
Totton 10K THIS REPORT WAS WRITTEN BY JT.
Eric led us home, just dipping under 40 minutes and rather unhappy with his performance. Steve is just getting back after prolonged injury and consequent weight increase but seemed reasonably satisfied with his time. JT never got to grips with the wind, particlarly in the latter stages and struggled home in a lack-lustre time.
Jamie Jones was also putting himself about but, despite taking 3rd spot seemed rather disappointed with his time of 32:01.

ANOTHER REPORT FROM JT: MAY 21st.
NETLEY 10km.

 
Ever since this event was started by Southampton Running Club some 12 years ago it has been a happy hunting ground with club members getting amongst the “silverware”. This year the tradition was continued by Audra who had an excellent run to finish 2nd lady in 40:57.
However, Audra was led home by the in-form Eric who decided that the course was a bit slow by not dipping under 40 minutes as usual. After him came Dave Henery, not on this occasion in a club vest but running in a corporate team for his firm. Last year he was beaten by a colleague who, it seems, paid the ultimate price for his audacity by being sacked !, Dave made sure this didn’t happen this year with much to spare.
Steve continues to make progress with his overall fitness with a useful run but was unhappy that he couldn’t get going in the first half of the race. He came good in the 2nd half running it 40 seconds faster. JT felt pretty good throughout the race and only suffered in the last mile which is psychologically difficult because one can see the finish some way away.

 
Young Athletes Meeting at Andover29th May from Geoff 
Arran ran an intelligent race running just behind the leader gaining valuable protection from a stiff headwind, along one of the straights. His tactics worked well and he finished 2^nd in his heat. In the final he finished 6^th

Trip down Memory Lane from Franny
 

This months trip back in time takes us back to March 1983 when the club hosted the county 10 mile championship. Some amazingly brisk times were recorded on a course that became notorious for it’s numerous hills.The course started half-way down Silk Mill lane, from here the route ran up to Southington, along the B3400, through the High Street and up Overton hill. A left at the crossroads at the top took the field back down Straight lane to the farm at the bottom of Station hill, back along Station Rd. and another climb up Overton hill. We followed the B3400 out to Ashe where we turned left and took the long stretch (via Nutley Bottom) to the Kingsclere road. From there it was a straight, though hilly, run back to Overton, entering the village at the top of Foxdown for the final downhill finish at Bridge Street.


HANTS. 1O MILE CHAMPS. 27th MARCH 1983. 
What a tremendous event this turned out to be, complete with a thrilling finsh. Paul was always in contention and by the 5 mile point was in a group with Mike Bliss and Joe Wildash from Basingstoke and Kevin Kiddle from Portsmouth, some way in front of the rest of the field. Wildash got dropped at this stage but the other three ran together until they turned back towards the village on the Kingsclere road. Here Bliss put in a kick and opened a gap on the other two and it wasn’t until just outside the village that Paul dropped his Portsmouth rival and set after the Basingstoke athlete.
Unfortunately he left it just a shade too late and although he was closing there was still a 5 second gap at the end, but it was still a marvellous run and a very respectable time for the hilly course. But Paul was far from being the only hero that day. Dave had had another stormer and easily gained a PB for 10 miles in 7th place, his run being highlighted by a sprint finish in which he edged out Basingstoke’s 3rd counter Chris Tall. Brian also produced another cracker as he too gained a PB. His sterling effort was good enough to give us 3rd team spot as we edged Fareham 29 points to 33, but behind Basingstoke’s 13 and Portsmouth’s 19.
Dave Perren proved his value to the club as he led our B team home after a tremendous tussle with JT who was just one position behind. Ian McGibbon closed the team,narrowly missing the hour but there were other close finishes. Eric just just holding off the challenge of Richard , while our super-vets were separated by only half a minute with Morton gaining a narrow superiority over Larry. Between these two pairs Pete was having another stormer and for the second time recently gained a PB, our 3rd of the afternoon to complete a successful day.
