PLEASE NOTE THAT SOME EVENTS MAY BE CANCELLED, CHECK NOTICE BOARD OR RUNNING MAGAZINES FOR FURTHER INFO.
Now that the foot and mouth outbreak seems to be dying out the public footpaths and bridleways are gradually being opened. This, of course, means that we can run off road and we have already done several pleasant runs on Sunday mornings. These runs cover generally cover between ten and fifteen miles but the routes are normally chosen so that there are several cut-off points for anyone who wants to do a shorter run. So, if you find it difficult fitting your training in after work or just fancy a slow run on a different route, join the group at 9 o’clock at Bridge Street on Sunday morning.
The Southern track league got under way with a fine second place at Andover, many thanks to all those who helped out on the day with judging, timekeeping and recording. It was also nice to see a good turnout of supporters despite the breezy weather. A good result may be on the cards in the next fixture at BATTERSEA PARK on June 2nd as the other four teams all currently lie below us in the table following the opening round.
Another good turnout for the first mobmatch against Basingstoke over a new and far from flat course round Nutley Bottom. We managed to win the event by 463 points to 590. Thanks must be given to Geoff and Paul for their efforts and to the ladies who supplied the food after the event.
Finally, best wishes to Ian Ford as he prepares for his forthcoming European Duathlon championship in Portugal.
Thanks to JT for supplying the following two reports.
TOTTON 10km.
Well over 700 runners graced this year’s race, some 200 more than last year, probably due to the cancellation of so many events because of foot & mouth. Mike had a sensational run so soon after returning from an extended period of injury which virtually wiped out his winter programme. He took fifth overall and was first Vet, just getting the better of GARY Eagle and Vince Stamp with only 7 seconds covering them.
Paul was our second runner home with a solid performance in 36:01. Cath made it a family double not too far behind in 37.54 which placed her 3rd lady overall (behind two Exeter Harriers) and 2nd Vet. Next home was the evergreen Eric who seemed a little disappointed with his lack-lustre performance but was good enough to outpace Mick Woods who started steadily but would have been satisfied with a clocking of 42.06
Liz seemed to fall victim of a strange category system where there were no O/45 prizes but the categories being 35-49 then 50-59. Her performance would have probably put her amongst the prizes had the age groups been conventional. JT had a race long ding dong with Andover’s John Goulding, one of many over the years, to be caught only in the last 200 yards to lose out by a mere four seconds. Following him in were Gwyneth who had one of her first races after a long lay off and Moira who completed the club interest with a good run.

As reported in the last newsletter both Mike and Cath won County Vets. Titles at this event
.ANDOVER 10km.
This was a brilliantly organized race and might have been the correct distance; the start having been extended back about half a mile from last years start. Otherwise it took the same winding route around the town Centre and even passed through the Chantry shopping Centre. After last years incorrect distance fiasco I was rather surprised that the entry was slightly more for this year.
Our first finisher would have been Chris Jones, but he was obliged to drop out with a bad cold and cough, and also probably partly due to his heroic exploits in the Southern league match the day before! Thus the distinction fell to Eric who continued his excellent form with a 28.50 clocking in 28th place to take the Vets O/55 trophy for his efforts.
Next came Paddy on a rare outing for the club who probably ran directly from home in what he was standing up in, which included a very special pair of socks!! And a race programme tucked into the back of his shorts. His time of 40.18 suggested that he lacks race fitness and we look forward to seeing more of him in the future.
Liz took the first lady over-45 trophy with a solid run in 44.12, outstripping JT who was awarded 2nd the Vet O/60 prize. He was slightly aggrieved because the age limits set by the organisers to be 61-65 years and not 60-64 as is the convention. The first over 61 prize was awarded to a Newbury runner who was just 65!

210 Finished.SOUTHERN TRACK & FIELD LEAGUE at ANDOVER.
MAY 5th.A fine start to the season for our track and field athletes on a bright but breezy day at Andover. A good turnout meant that every event was covered though the rather run down facilities forced the cancellation of the pole vault, which may, or may not, have cost us a few extra points that could have given us victory. Busiest man on the day was Dave Bush who covered eight events, including both relays. His best results came in the hurdles with wins in the A string 400H and B string 110H. Backing him up with seven events was Alan Cornell whose events ranged from sprinting, through jumping to the throwing events. His best result was a close 2nd place in the A string 110H. Simon Morgan scored well in the throwing events with good support from the ever-youthful Geggy.
We dominated the middle-distance events with only three points being dropped from a possible forty. Debut man Chris and Keith Clark scored a brace of second places in the 800, and Keith took another second in the A 1500. Mark won the B string but suffered a re-occurrence of his ankle injury and had to scratch from the steeplechase. The persuasive tongue of Dave Vosser got Richard Parr to make a winning steeplechase debut. With Keith Vallis winning the B string (to add to a 400H second place) we recorded our second win double of the day as Jamie and Mike both had clear victories in the 5000m. Voss is still troubled by injury but scored a good second place in the B400m. The match result was a close three-way battle throughout the afternoon but with Newton Abbot losing big points in the steeplechase it was down to two teams in the final relay. Unfortunately Chiltern AC played their joker to win the match but second place gives us the foundations for a successful season.

MOB MATCH .v. BASINGSTOKE
17th MAY.A good turnout from the club with 22 runners helping us to a clear victory. Jamie took an easy win as we recorded the first six to finish. Second was Keith, who seems to have put his disappointing marathon behind him, with a fine run in a tight race to get the better of Ian and Mark. Aaron won a close race to pip Matt for the honor of finishing first junior and there was a steady club debut from Derek McCarthy. It was nice to see both Paddy and Gwyneth competing again with Linda also making a welcome return.

47 Finished.
This event also featured the first of the summer handicaps. If the race had been run as a normal handicap there would have been some very close finishes, first place went to Paddy who was only two seconds ahead of young Aaron. Third was Dave Bright who also had two seconds in hand, this time ahead of Gwyneth. Quite a few others were only separated by a few seconds and only 90 seconds covered the top fifteen. FULL RESULTS ARE ON THE NOTICE BOARD.

Update on the Duathlon Front from Ian
JT caught me at the Dinner the other week and said my name had cropped up in various race results and asked whether I could provide an update on what I’d been doing of late, well here it is.
April/May is one of the main times of the year for Duathlons, the other being September/October, and my main aim has been to get in the necessary qualifying rides for the European and World Championships during these last few months. So since Eastleigh it’s been:
25th March Hillingdon Duathlon 50.37 3rd Overall 2nd Vet
1st April Fila Breakfast Run 38.36 2nd Overall 1st Vet
8th April Thruxton Duathlon 1.09.23 14th Overall 2nd Vet
14th April Dave Lloyd Qtr Marathon 36.02 7th Overall 2nd Vet
22nd April Hereford Duathlon 1.24.15 20th Overall 2nd Vet
29th April Swansea Valley Duathlon 1.59.44 50th Overall 3rd Vet
2nd May Castle Coombe Duathlon 46.43 10th Overall 2nd Vet
6th May Dragonslayer Duathlon 1.46.41 6th Overall 2nd Vet
As you can see from the above, despite Foot and Mouth, still a pretty hectic racing period in which I’ve hit a fairly good vein of form, with a pattern of 2nd place on the vet front emerging, the other common themes are that most of the duathlons have been very windy and cold, and the bike splits have been improving.
The only blip to the second places was in Swansea, but this was the British Championships and so I was well pleased with a bronze medal in the 40-45 Age Group. It was also a qualifier for the Worlds in Rimini Italy in September, have also been accepted for the G.B team for the Europeans in Mafra, Portugal in July.
Have another couple of duathlons coming up then unfortunately none until Portugal, so will have to make do with road races and brick sessions in training.
So if I don’t bump into any of you at the road races over the next couple of months I will make sure that I send in an update from the Europeans.
By the way in case there’s anyone out there who doesn’t know what a brick session is, it’s just a session of bike/run/bike reps of as long or short as you like, for as many times as you like.!!!!!
One of the shorter ones I do is 10min, run, 15min bike, repeated 3 or 4 times. They’re good hard sessions getting you used to the two disciplines as well as providing practice for the transitions.
Ian Ford.
Junior Pentathlon Sunday May 20th at Down Grange from Geoff
Although there were fewer competitors than in previous years the standard was much higher due to the demonstrations and technical advice given by Dave Vosser in the High Jump and Mike Bliss in the Shot Put.
Katherine McGill was the undoubted star with the fastest time of 14:45 in the 100m, and the best height of 1.34m in the High Jump to give her a 5* rating in her age group.
Scott Graham won the Shot Put with a massive throw of 7.09m and gained a PB by 16 secs in the 800m with a time of 2m 42secs.
Matt Bright also gained a PB in the 800m with a time of 2m 43secs.
Claire Boyle and Aaron Harris did well in all events to finish with a 4* rating in their respective age groups
Mike’s youngsters Josh and Sophie together with their friend Virginia competed in good spirit wisely regarding it as a Fun Event.
Senior Pentathlon Sunday May 20th at Down Grange from Geoff
Although lacking in numbers this year’s event went down very well and was competitive throughout.
Chris Jones opened up a lead in the 100m sprint with a time of 12.71secs, but was quickly overtaken by Adam Gold with a great leap in the Long Jump of 4.91m.
Darren Cuff then moved substantially into the lead by 400 points with throws of 25.72m and 38.14m in the Discus and Javelin respectively.
The competition was settled in the final event, the 1500m, with Chris coming home in 4m 24s to win by a margin of 85 points from Darren, with Adam third having recorded a time of 4m 50s in his first ever 1500m race.
David Bright competed in good spirit recording 5m 8s in his first 1500m, whilst Cath undaunted by male predominance continued with her good form by recording another sub 5minute 1500m.
Young Athletes Meeting Andover 28th May Andover from Geoff
Aaron found himself up against the odds in this race being in the first year of the U15Boys. Undaunted he went with the pace running the first 400m in 72secs. He struggled over the next 200m, before pushing himself hard over the final 200m to finish 4th in a time of 2mins 31secs.
Bionic
May has been a good month with the track and road racing events in full swing and some good performances from a number of club members. However our award this month goes to someone who managed to cram in one day what most of us would need a week to complete. At our first track meeting in Andover he competed in the100m, 200m, 110m and 400m hurdles, long jump, triple jump, 4 by 100m, and 4 by 400m.
Congratulations
Dave Bush. You have set a blistering pace that may well set us on the road to promotion.
